OYEZ |
5/11/72 |
Dear Peoples,
Appended herewith is my final OYEZ for 1972 containing a wealth of information about what to do over the holidays (if you're in any doubt!) and a miscellany of other information you may find useful.
In the party department, Tony D_____'s family have very kindly offered to host a farewell party for Annabel W______, who leaves us shortly for the Mother Country where she will take up a Post-doctorate post at Warwick University. The party is to be held next Saturday night (11th) and I need not say that Annabel would like to see all of us there. I personally would like to thank Annabel for being such a help in my term as President - for being such a cheering influence on us all, and for being so musically valuable as well (G&S will never sound the same again!). Tony's address is
__ Hawker Street, TORRENS.
The following weekend, "it will be on"1 at my place for no particular reason other than the end of the exams (for most people hopefully) and the fact that Canberra will be graced with two interstate visitors. I live at 6A McPherson Court, O'CONNOR.
Anyone who will be here over the Christmas holidays and who would like to sing carols or somesuch sometime before Christmas is invited to come along to Burgmann at 7.15 on Wednesday or else phone Brian (95 1286) or me (47 0524) and let us know. The concert itself will most likely be during the week before Christmas.2
The camp will be held this year on the weekend of 17th/18th December. For the uninitiated, this is SCUNA's annual intimate nurgle with SUMS.3 Apart from this, it is SUMs' rehearsal camp for their Carol Festival which is held annually (to literally packed houses!) in the Great Hall at Sydney University, this year on Thursday 21st December. SCUNA people are invited to participate in their camp activities and rehearsals etc and to sing in the concert also if they so wish. If you're interested contact Meg (Burton Hall) or me.
Songbooks are still available from me at a mere $1. Of the new lot, more have been bought by members of the Children's Choir than by SCUNA members. The songbook is an essential commodity, an invaluable asset at parties, O-week concerts, Bush week Parades etc. etc., so raise your game, all ye who are without (songbooks!)
This issue of OYEZ, in addition to its intrinsic virtues, is accompanied by a copy of the latest Erato. I have been asked by the editor, Bob Kay, to draw your attention to the questionnaire on the back page. Please fill it in, and send it, or give it to Meg, even if you have no intention of going to IV in 1975.
Whilst we're on the subject of Erato, Mark feels he has had his innings as SCUNA Erato correspondent and would like to be relieved of the responsibility - the job entails writing a periodical burble about events in SCUNA of a more general interest. Are there any takers?
Good luck in your exams!
Merry Christmas etc. etc!
See you all next year!
Yours Passionately,
R.D.
1One of those 70s phrases.
2Apparently they sang Schütz, Dunstable, Wilbye, Monteverdi, and carols, but who knows when or where? I don't even know where I got the programme, which is a lesson in what happens when you don't take thorough notes.
3"Nurgle" is a Goon Show term which can mean anything you like. The tradition of going up to Otford and singing with SUMS in their Carol Festival was, as far as I know, instituted by Gilbert in 1969. The then conductor of SUMS, Peter Seymour, seemed a bit bemused by the arrival of a bunch of interlopers. I don't know how long the practice persisted.
4The SCUNA/UNCS Songbook, edited by Richard Hartley, was first published in 1971, and warrants a page of its own. O'course I haven't made it a page of its own yet!
5"Erato is the official newsletter of AICSA (Australian Intervarsity Choral Societies Association) and is published 3-5 times a year. It's distributed free to member societies, and contains reports from all of the society committees (and from the AICSA committee), articles from society members and articles on issues that are relevant to the AICSA community."
The latest Erato at that time was Number 8.
