OYEZ NO 6 4TH SEPT 74

Greetings -

Note (Bb): 'Tis time for a brief epistle, according to me, informing you as to the various coming attractions on the SCUNA calendar.

1. Rehearsals - still on Tuesdays (7.30 Union Meetings Room). Only 5 (five) rehearsals (& Dress rehearsal) to go before the event, these are on the 10th, 17th, 24th, of Sept, & 1st and 8th Oct. [Plus handwritten:] & 15 Oct.

The Dress rehearsal will be on 18th Oct at 7.30.

2. The concert will be on Saturday, Oct 19th, at 8.00 pm in the Great Hall at University House.1 More details will be given at later rehearsals but start telling people about it now and entice them to attend. (please).

3. The AGM will be on Saturday, Sept 21st at the ANU Staff Club; this gala evening will include A.G.M., a sumptuous repast (dinner), and a musicale cum review, at which hardy volunteers will perform items for the multitude. Inebriating waters will be at hand, and a good time will be had by all. If you want to perform in this, either singly or in groups (& I encourage you to do so), please let Richard Dixon know as soon as possible.

The AGM will be held first and you need not attend the dinner (but you're mad if you don't). The cost of the dinner (wine included) will be $6-$7 per head, and a form will be circulated (to be returned by Tuesday 17th) for you to fill in if you're coming.

4. Post IV parties. Main one of interest is in Sydney on 28th Sept at a place to be yet revealed. SCUNA's Post IV party will be on 12TH OCT.2

A brief word about IV.3 Special congratulations to Neidra, Fiona and Gillian, who were selected to be part of the solo semi-chorus for the Vaughan Williams mass in g minor and were a credit to us. On the more social side, SCUNA, in the sculling races, won the mixed eights, led by Debbie Martin (who was the new )[sic] and the individual sculling.4 We also won the President's Pyjamas for the 2nd year in succession.

Next May, SCUNA is hosting a mini choral festival for 1 week, called MAYHEM. Arrangements for this should start right away, and you are asked to give thought as to whether you want to take an active part in organising. More will be said about this (much more) when a convenor is appointed. The MAYHEM committee positions will probably be filled at the A.G.M., so could you give the matter some thought before then.5

We are rather stuck at the moment for the acquisition of choir stands for the concert. Anyone who has any ideas on the matter, please see Mark H, who is Concert Manager, as soon as possible (Mark works at Environment & Conservation) or Phone.

I forgot to mention previously about the elections of a new SCUNA committee at the A.G.M. (as distinct from the MAYHEM committee). Posts to be filled are President, Secretary, Treasurer, Librarian, & 3 non-executive offices (a first year rep will be elected at the first term camp next year). The other committee position is that of Immediate Past President, which was voted on last year.

Once again, could you please give thought to who you wish to nominate for these positions, and let me have nominations before or at the A.G.M. (before if possible).

Finally, I'd like to have a word about rehearsals, concerts etc. As you are well aware, the music we are preparing is fairly difficult , and we have only a few more rehearsals to get it up to the standard Brian insists on, which is obviously high. This means that we must have full attendance at rehearsals from now on, and a proper attitude to rehearsing once we start.

The last concert you will recall was a great success and I would hope that this will be an even greater one. It has the potential to be so. We owe it to ourselves, for the amount of work most people have put into preparing for the concert, to achieve that potential, and do justice to the music and ourselves.

Keith Currie (president).

3The annual Intervarsity Choral Festival. In 1974 it was held in Adelaide. See AICSApedia entry for more details.

4Modesty!

"According to Robert Kay (most recently of PUCS), the record time for an individual is 1.21 seconds for a seven ounce glass, shared by Mark Penman and Keith Currie, which was set at Port Elliot in 1974. Currie was eventually awarded the trophy on a majority vote of the scrutineers after three re-runs had failed to produce a clear result." - AICSApedia on Sculling.

Presumably it was also Keith who won the President's Pyjamas, an Iron-Man-style race held at IV.

5I have information about Mayhem, but it's not yet online. Meanwhile, see No. 3 on AICSApedia's list of Minifests.
