Philip, as he was known, worked in Drapery and General Stores all his life and must have travelled to rural Victoria in search of work. When he was 16 (c. 1889) he became an employee of Mr A. T. Darling of Sheep hills until c 1902, and then went to Colac and Pomborneit in the Western District.  At the time of his marriage he was living in Boort, for the birth of his first child he was in Melbourne and working for Mr J. Brake at the Melbourne Cash stores in Collingwood. For most of his working life he managed the grocery department  for what eventually became Phillip's Co-operative in Minyip.

He was known for his keen interest in sport, amateur theatricals and brass bands. Reading of Charles Dickens, Shakespeare, Sir Walter Scott and sporting papers was his hobby. He could sing and dance, and excelled in Swiss yodelling and Russian dancing. He also wrote poetry - letters to his younger daughter were often in verse, and he wrote skits on family members and local identities in Minyip - accompanied by pen and ink sketches.

Ira Gelling Craine b: 1877 in Linton, Vic, Aus  d: 2 January 1940 in Preston, Vic, AUS
married Emily Donnelly abt. 1920.
This marriage is problematical. The family certainly did not know of any wife, and she is not mentioned on his War Service Records, but she is listed as his wife on his death certificate. It is possible that he may have been living in her family home in 5 Stewart Street, Preston when he died.
Paddy, as he was known lived mainly in Linton, but as he worked for the railways he travelled within rural Victoria. He lived on the outskirts of Linton in a hut he had made of Corrugated iron. He also had a small mine there! He was the 'black sheep' of the family, as he developed problems with alcohol.

Paddy made a visit to the Isle of Man during the years he was in the Army in WW 1, (maybe it was one of the times he was AWOL!) One of the Craine family who remembered his visit did not understand until she was older why her mother was uncomfortable with this - apparently he frequented one or both of the local pubs! But she goes on to say he probably had his fare share of virtues too - wit, humour, tolerance and kindliness. this has been re iterated in other oral history. He was a lovely man except when he'd had too much to drink.

Lottie Isabel Craine b: 1881 in Linton, Vic, Aus  d: Abt. 2 December 1961 in Footscray, Vic, AUS
She served sweets and soft drinks in her mothers shop in Linton
