The early years

William Craine, son of John Craine and Ann Kewish, was baptised in Ballaugh, Isle of Man on February 10th 1839.
It is likely that he was born at the family home of Mwyllin Squeen  and moved to Brough Jairg Moar nearby in Ballaugh, soon after.
On the 27th November 1862 he married (by licence) Jane Shimmin in Onchan, although he gave Ballaugh as his place of  residence.
William and Jane sailed from Liverpool for Melbourne, Australia on 5th December the same year on the 'Great Tasmania' The tickets had been purchased prior to the marriage as Jane had to procure from the minister who married them a 'Certificate of Identity' to assert that Jane Shimmin was now officially Jane Craine.

A little is known of William's character from a poem written by his younger brother Robert and I have quoted some below:

'Handsome and headstrong, fearless, bold
Goodhearted, kind and free
Of two extremes we're often told
Composed is such as he.
From early youth his thoughts were bent
Upon the dark blue sea,
The farmer vowed, nor would relent
A sailor never he should be'
The farmer referred to is William's father, and it was almost immediately after his death that William married and emigrated.
His sire's demise the signal gave
For passions long restrained to burst
His thoughts bent upon the wave
He left his home and land of birth
And sailed for Australia's clime
Where first prosperity did shine
Tis all we know of reckless Will
(We hope reformed and prosperous still)

My thanks to Joy Ling for sharing this verse with me.

Life in Australia

The Great Tasmania arrived in Melbourne on 23 March 1863 so the newly weds celebrated their first Christmas together at sea. The worst of the Australian summer would have been over by then.
They settled in Linton, Victoria where William continued his trade as a watchmaker. Jane ran a small shop which sold sweets and they lived behind this shop. She was well known in the district as she assisted at births and the laying out of the dead.
William died in 1908, described as a full old age pensioner. Oral family history suggests he was a heavy drinker.

Jane Shimmin

Jane Shimmin was baptised in the parish of Ballaugh on 10 July 1840 and received into the congregation on January 13th 1841. Her parents were Philip Shimmin and Isabella Gelling.
At the time of her marriage she was living in Douglas.
She died in Linton in 1925.
One of her grand daughers described her as 'a dear' but very prim. She was about 6 ft tall and as straight as a rod - she wore a fancy cap on her head and a small apron. Her 'shop' was a haberdashery and a small sweets and soft drink shop area run by Aunt Lottie. Granny also had three manx cats (all came to live with her on their own) They were beautiful cats - tail-less of course. She spoke gently to them and they seemed to know what she said.
Granny was often called upon to assist at births etc.

She was not the only one in her family to emigrate to Australia - her brothers Philip and Robert also came to Victoria.
