Philip Shimmin 1828-1921

Philip Shimmin was baptised on 08 Jun 1828, Ballaugh, Isle Of Man, UK
He married Eleanor Sarah Teare on 3 November 1850 in Maughold, IOM, UK .
Two children were born on the Isle -
Janet Maude Shimmin, and Philip Teare Shimmin.
At the time of the 1851 census he had moved to the mainland, was a grocer and was living with his cousin Hugh Shimmin at 43 Rodney St, Toxteth Park Liverpool.

In 1853 Philip  emigrated to Australia on the 'Constance' arriving in December. Eleanor did not follow him until 1856, travelling on the 'Donald McKay.' By this time Janet was 6 years old.
Two further children were born - Marion Mona Shimmin in Castlemaine and Charles Gilbert Shimmin in Melbourne.
When Philip remarried he said that Sarah had died in 1859, in fact she returned to the Isle of Man, leaving in August 1859 on the 'British Trident' bound for Liverpool and would have been home before Jane and William Craine's marriage and departure for Australia.
Philip subsequently married Christina (Meldrum) Hill in 1894 in Hurstwood, Vic. At that time he stated that two of his children were still living, so he must have had some contact with family back home.
He died in 1921 in Melbourne South and is buried in the Brighton Cemetery. There was no family member present to register his death and no children are listed.
Christina died in 1926 in Melbourne South (residence Albert park) and is also buried in the Brighton Cemetery. There is a headstone placed there by Christina's daughters.

Philip came from a farming backround on the Isle of Man, in Australia in 1858 he was living in Castlemaine a gold mining area where his brother Robert had made his home. For a period of time in Castlemaine he had a job in the Sherriff's Office, but was forced to resign because he became insovent. He applied for another Government Job but by 1859 he was in Melbourne and he said he was a gold miner.
I have no knowledge of his whereabouts between 1859 and 1894. I do not think he returned to the British Isles..
At the time of his second marriage he was farming again north of Bendigo. Between the years 1909 and 1914 he was a labourer living on Murray Banks, Echuca East in Victoria, by 1919 he was a grocer in Sth Melbourne. His death certificate identifies him as a farmer.

SARAH ELEANOR (TEARE) SHIMMIN

Sarah Elinor Teare was baptised on 1 October 1830, in Andreas, IOM. Only her mother Cath is mentioned in the register, but other documents say her father was Charles Teare.
Details of her marriage and children are above in the paragraph on Philip Shimmin. No-one would know what made her leave her husband and return with 4 children, the youngest only a very new baby.
On her return to the Isle of Man, calling herself a grocer's wife, she lived with her parents at 11 Albert Row, Ramsey (Charles, her father, was now a Harbour Master)
I think Marion may have died by this time, and Philip must have been living elsewhere. Janet and Charles Gilbert are with their mother in 1861. Sarah is still with her parents in 1871, but no listing of children with her.
In 1871 Phillip is an apprentice with William Shimmin, a draper, who lives at 27 Parliament St, Ramsey.
By 1881 both she and Philip, her mother and Janet, a milliner, (now Janet Taggart) are in Liverpool living at 119 Granby St, calling herelf a widow. Philip is a commercial traveller. Her aunt Jane Corlett is the head of the house.
Janet has 2 children - another Janet age 3, and William P. age 2.
In 1891, except for the aunt, they are all still in Toxteth park, Liverpool. Janet Taggart jr's place of birth is given as Indiana, USA
In 1901 Sarah is at 7 Prince Albert Rd, Wavertree, Liverpool. This census entry is confusing. In the first place in the index she appears as Salah E. Sheininim.
Janet M. Johnston, married, age 48 is the head; Janet M. Taggart, Single, is listed as a stepdaughter!, and Sarah as mother-in-law. They have a visitor Gertrude Goddere.

Thanks to the oral history suppled by an aunt of Bitsfitz (Bitsy Fitzimmon) we have a little more informaton about the family of Janet Maude Shimmin.
Some time prior to 1875 she travelled to the USA where she married William Taggart on 12th  August 1875 in Indianapolis, IN.
William was also a Manx boy, his family had lived at Ballaglass, but sadly William  died 10th September 1878 in St. Louis, MO of yellow fever.
By the 12th August 1892 Janet had returned to Liverpool as she married Leslie Arthur Johnson on that day.
