Hint: This site is intended as a search aid - not a definitive source. It is essentially an index to documents that seem to relate to this person plus a very brief precis of relevant elements. Sources often conflict and I also flag things with a ? when I am unsure. So if the information below is important to you, then please check the original sources to see what else they contain (and in case I have inadvertantly introduced transcription and/or precising errors). There can be additional information that was not included in the database for both space and copyright reasons.

Arthur Elwyn Montague BATTYE grazier of North Bangaroo Goolagong said [to the 'Pay' Royal Commission 28.6.1905 that] he was one of 50 who volunteered for the Bushmen's Contingent and came to Sydney in a body from Forbes. He and his men did not see Mr. ATKINSON in regard to the matter. They did not go to Mr. ATKINSON for a ticket to get into the camp. On one occasion while in the camp some ten or twelve of the men, he thought, were turned out of camp, and on inquiring of them the reason they said some of them were shearers on a station belonging to Mr. ATKINSON, and they had been on strike. He accompanied the contingent to South Africa. He was under the impression that the 4s 6d per day to be paid here had nothing to do with what they were to get from the Imperial Government.

Bomb.Hd.: Letter from the Front - Trooper W WATSON writing to a friend from Pretoria Hospital, under date 31.7.1900 says: The Boers are now 150 miles north of here and they are surrounded by Buller, French and Roberts. I suppose you wonder how I come to be here, well I have been nearly dead with enteric fever. This is my first day up this month and this is the 31st. I suppose you heard I was captured by the Boers, Lieutenant BATTY and myself being captured while taking dispatches through from Rustenburg to Elands River. They held us for four days, the last night Lieutenant BATTY shot our Guard with his own rifle and we then got away in the dark. I have the rifle now, it is a Mauser Sporting Rifle.

URL8: Trooper W WATSON, late of Bombala NSW, who has been serving in the 1st Regiment Australian Bushmen, writing to a friend from Pretoria Hospital, under date 31.7.1900, says - 'I suppose you wonder how I come to be here? Well, I have been nearly dead with enteric fever. This is my first day up for a month. Did you hear I was captured by the Boers? Yes, Lieutenant BATTY, and myself were captured while taking dispatches through to Elands River from Rustenburg. They held us for four days, and on the last Lieutenant BATTY shot our guard with his own rifle, and we then got away in the dark. The rifle was a Mauser sporting, and I have it now. We have been under fire nine times. One of my mates was shot, but has recovered, and is getting a six months trip to England on full pay, being the first Bushman to be wounded.

Please email me if you can contribute any other relevant information about this person (eg any other military service, where in Australia they came from or when/where they died). Also, if you find an external link broken.

Apology: For some time now it has been difficult to keep up with the newly available sources (especially the Trove newspaper site) plus the flow of contributions and queries. So I have been forced to prioritise maintenance and data entry over replying to correspondence. Nevertheless, your contributions are being added to the database and acknowledged on the contributions page and, although my replies are many months behind, I will attempt to get to them more often.
