Brisbane Monday [7.9.1908]. Work in connection with clearing away the rocks at the scene of the Mount Morgan mining disaster was started as soon as was safe. The debris and rocks were quickly cleared away, and at 3:30 yesterday morning the rescue party found the bodies of LEISHMANN, SHEPHERD and GUTHRIE lying huddled together. GUTHRIE was the worst injured. The work of rescue was continued with renewed vigor, and at 6 o'clock this morning the bodies of JORRY, HILLYARD and GERRKE were found. RYAN's body was found at 6 o'clock yesterday evening. Death had apparently been instantaneous in each case. The bodies were terribly knocked about. LEISHMANN's body was only identified by a piece of moustache and his hat. Two bodies had to be brought up in bags. They were cut to pieces. Five of the dead men were married. HILLYARD leaves a wife and two children, GUTHRIE a wife and one child, LEISHMANN a wife and one child. JORRY and GERRKE had no family. LEISHMANN was a member of the Rockhampton contingent that went to South Africa during the Boer war. GUTHRIE should not have been on shift, but agreed to take the place of a man engaged in a boxing contest that night. URL5: Returned Soldiers. ALBANY (WA), January 24 [1902].
