Hint: This site is intended as a search aid - not a definitive source. It is essentially an index to documents that seem to relate to this person plus a very brief precis of relevant elements. Sources often conflict and I also flag things with a ? when I am unsure. So if the information below is important to you, then please check the original sources to see what else they contain (and in case I have inadvertantly introduced transcription and/or precising errors). There can be additional information that was not included in the database for both space and copyright reasons.

Extracts and Comments (from Sources as shown) | | Murray: Sergeant 1.6.1900 Lieutenant 5QIB. B5172: Tarraville Gippsland Vic. URL1: photo #10. URL3: A new departure in regard to the rile club movement in
South Gippsland was undertaken on the Yarram range on Saturday last [1.3.1902],
when a sham fight was successfully carried out under the superintendence of Sergeant G LIVINGSTON, a returned soldier from South Africa (late of Queensland), who was assisted by ex-Lieutenant J BIRAM, of the Warragul Rangers, the captain of the Yarram Rifle Club (Mr AJ ROSSITER) and Mr JE PICKETT. The site chosen was most suitable for the manoeuvres, being undulating and lightly timbered land. The main attacking force was led by Sergeant LIVINGSTON, who, after his scouts had drawn the fire from the defenders of the position taken up situated behind the crest of a hill, fired volley after volley, and between the fire advanced at the double, eventually securing the "kopje." Preparatory to the sham fight the sergeant gave instruction in horse and foot drill - a most necessary item in connection with rifle clubs. The company also went through battle firing at head and shoulder targets, and obtained a very fair percentage. Much surprise and indignation was expressed at the parsimoniousness of the Defence department in not supplying free ammunition for the sham fight, the club being charged more for the blank ammunition
for this purpose than is paid for ball cartridges. This action is far from being an incentive to riflemen in country districts to take advantage of
the useful experience of mimic warfare.

Please email me if you can
contribute any other relevant information about this person (eg any
other military service, where in Australia they came from or when/where
they died). Also, if you find an external link broken.
Apology: For some time now it has been difficult to keep up with the newly available sources (especially the Trove newspaper site) plus the flow of contributions and queries. So I have been forced to prioritise maintenance and data entry over replying to correspondence. Nevertheless, your contributions are being added to the database and acknowledged on the contributions page and, although my replies are many months behind, I will attempt to get to them more often.
