Hint: This site is intended as a search aid - not a definitive source. It is essentially an index to documents that seem to relate to this person plus a very brief precis of relevant elements. Sources often conflict and I also flag things with a ? when I am unsure. So if the information below is important to you, then please check the original sources to see what else they contain (and in case I have inadvertantly introduced transcription and/or precising errors). There can be additional information that was not included in the database for both space and copyright reasons.

Extracts and Comments (from Sources as shown) | | Murray: wounded 28.7.1901. B5204: drover born 1872 in Deniliquin NSW, Queen's South Africa Medal (SA01 & SA02). West Australian: slightly wounded at Elands R. URL1: War Memorial Deniliquin NSW. URL5: BACK FROM THE WAR. WELCOME TO RETURNED SOLDIERS. Deniliquin, 11th June [1902]. Yesterday afternoon the Mayor (Alderman KELLY) and several aldermen drove out a few miles to meet and welcome some of the returned local volunteers who have been campaigning in South Africa. The passengers on the Finley coach comprised Messrs. BAYLISS (2) and AMOR, Messrs. HALLIDAY and LOZ having arrived on the previous Saturday, but they were all treated to an official welcome at the Globe hotel, where their healths were enthusiastically drunk. The returned warriors are all natives of the town and district, and some of them being only just out of their teens when they departed, have developed into fine, broad shouldered men, who would be a credit to any country. URL6: RETURNED SOLDIERS. On Saturday last [7.6.1902] Mr. Charlie LOY and William HALLIDAY returned to Deniliquin after about 15 months' fighting in South Africa. Owing to the absence of the Mayor from town they were not officially received, but the warm welcome extended to them by their many friends must have been particularly gratifying to them. On Thursday afternoon [12.6.1902] three more returned home, viz. Walter AMOR and George and Phil BAYLISS. They were met by the Mayor and several citizens on the North Common. The Mayor said he was pleased on behalf of the residents to extend the young soldiers a hearty welcome on their return to Deniliquin. Three hearty cheers were called for and lustily given, and the gathering adjourned to the Sandhurst Hotel, where over a glass of wine the Mayor, Aldermen SPARROW and JONES spoke in eulogistic terms of the 'boys' who had left Deniliquin to take part in the war that had now happily been brought to a close. A further invitation was extended to the Sportsman's Arms, where the health of the Mayor and Mr. BAYLISS (father of George and Phil.) was drunk. The returned soldiers look well after their sea trip home, and all have gained weight. In fact, it has made men of them. It will be seen by our advertising columns that the 'boys' are to be welcomed by the members of the MUIOOF. URL7: MUIOOF Social, To the Returned Soldiers. The smoke social tendered by the members of the Oddfellows Lodge to their brothers and comrades on their return from South Africa was held in the Masonic Hall on Friday evening last [20.6.1902], and was an unqualified success. Past Grand Bro. KELLY (Mayor) occupied the Chair and seated on his right were Brothers George and Phil BAYLISS and Corporal AMOR, and on his left Troopers F and C DRUITT and Charlie LOY. .... The Mayor then proposed the toast, 'Our Guests' coupled with the names of Troopers G and P BAYLISS, C and F DRUITT, W AMOR, C LOY and W HALLIDAY, the latter whom he regretted to say was not present on account of ill health. ... Troopers Phil BAYLISS, F DRUITT and C LOY also returned thanks. ... The Mayor here presented the Brothers BAYLISS with a gold medal on behalf of the members of the Lodge, as a token of the esteem in which they were held; and said he hoped they would be spared long to wear them. A medal would also be presented to Brother HALLIDAY. Brothers BAYLISS returned thanks.

Apology: For some time now it has been difficult to keep up with the newly available sources (especially the Trove newspaper site) plus the flow of contributions and queries. So I have been forced to prioritise maintenance and data entry over replying to correspondence. Nevertheless, your contributions are being added to the database and acknowledged on the contributions page and, although my replies are many months behind, I will attempt to get to them more often.
