Extracts and Comments (from Sources as shown) | | URL1: Terowie SA-born JP 'Jack' MCGOWAN, a Boer War hero and actor before stumbling into films around 1912, went on to become one of Hollywood's first stunt directors. URL2: 'Jack' born 1880 in Terowie SA, grew up in Adelaide and Sydney NSW a capable horserider he served in the Second Boer War with Montmorency's Scouts as a special dispatch rider, recruited from S. Africa to the US to take part in a Boer War exhibit at the 1904 World's Fair he then began working in live theatre and in 1910 on the screen. Subsequently, JP MCGOWAN as he was usually known, became a pioneering Hollywood actor and film director, occasionally too a screenwriter and stunt actor and remains the only Australian made a life member of the Screen Directors Guild. He died in 1952 in Hollywood USA and is buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery at Glendale California. URL4: not found in WO127 Montmorency's Scouts roll extract. Source:# 1574 An image of a Queens' South Medal suspender carrying 6 clasps (Tug.Hts, RoL, LNek, Belf., OFS & CC), but medal itself is out of sight, plus images of a King's South Africa Medal (with clasps SA01 & SA02) renamed to *2 JP McGOWAN and *ORENCY'S SCOUTS. Roe: Tpr. JP MCGOWAN of Montmorency's Scouts not found on the Trove (Australian Newspapers site), only possibly John PP MCGOWAN, of the NSW Railways Permanent Way Branch amongst those attached to NSW Army Medical Corps c1.1900.
