URL4: The returned members of the Fifth and Sixth Contingents were tendered a welcome social in the International Hall on Monday evening [12.5.1902] by the local military forces. There was a large attendance, and it was with difficulty that sufficient seating accommodation could be provided. Those present included visitors from different corps along the line. The Hall was appropriately and effectively draped with flags and bunting, and the interior presented a very attractive appearance. Captain FORGAN occupied the chair. The returned members of contingents who were present were Lieutenant MIELL, Regimental Sergeant-Major FERRY, Regimental-Quartermaster Sergeant FITZGERALD, Sergeants WC and CH NOBLETT, Lance-Corporal STUCKEY, Trumpeter JEANES, Troopers C WELLINGTON, M STEWART, J SOUTAR, PATTERSON, GRIBBLE, PEDLAR, BROWN EYRE. The visitors included Sergeant MYATT and Troopers LATIMER and MCDONALD. The chairman read apologies from Lieutenant Colonel CATT, Adjutant SAMPSON, Lieutenant BUILDER, Captain Chaplain Archdeacon SAMWELL, Rev. AW WELLINGTON, Dr. WALKER and Sergeant JA LINES and Messrs. ROBERTSON, GEDDES and SOUTH. ... The Mayor, Mr. Donald ROSIE, occupied the chair, and in welcoming the returned soldiers expressed bis gratitude at their safe return. Mr. W GLASSON (Chairman of the District Council of Belalie), on behalf of the district, and Lieut. D CONNOR, representing the mounted rifles, and Messrs. H BOUCAUT, R ROWE, TP AXFORD and John CAMERON also spoke words of welcome. Sgts. CH NOBLET, WE NOBLET and Tpr. MARTIN replied. A smoke social was afterwards held in the upstairs room of the institute, when various toasts were submitted. Sgts. CH NOBLET and WE NOBLET and Tpr. LATTIMER, of Gladstone, narrated experiences of campaigning. A varied programme of instrumental and vocal music, under the direction of Mr. HR HOLDER, added much to the enjoyment of the evening.
