Hint: This site is intended as a search aid - not a definitive source. It is essentially an index to documents that seem to relate to this person plus a very brief precis of relevant elements. Sources often conflict and I also flag things with a ? when I am unsure. So if the information below is important to you, then please check the original sources to see what else they contain (and in case I have inadvertantly introduced transcription and/or precising errors). There can be additional information that was not included in the database for both space and copyright reasons.

URL5: The official ranks of the SA Military Forces have just received a welcome addition in the person of Sir. WGRP NORDMANN, who went through the early part of the South African campaign as a ranker with the Second Contingent, under Major CJ READE CB, and took part in the final stage in the Commonwealth Horse under Lieutenant-Colonel LE MESSURIER, as a commissioned officer. Lieutenant NORDMANN was born in India in 1876, came to Adelaide in 1891, and in 1892 passed the Civil Service examination with honors. He inherits his love of martial affairs from his father, who served in the Anglo-German Legion in the Crimea. The new officer had some thrilling experiences in the late war, and in one battle, although unhorsed himself, he courageously assisted a distressed trooper out of danger. Lieutenant NORDMANN is a quiet young fellow, he is full of courage and energy.

GORDON of the 2nd Bedfordshire Regiment, is also booked for Adelaide.
URL8: Lieutenant NORDMANN, one of the South Australian subalterns of the 8th Battalion South Australian Commonwealth Horse had a thrilling experience near Johannesburg when serving as a member of the Second Contingent, under Major GJ READE CB. He became detached from his comrades, and rode right into the clutches of a de tachment of Boers, who promptly called out "Hands up." The next second Lieutenant NORDMANN realised what it meant to be a prisoner of war. As one of the captors was proceeding to ride the prisoner's horse Lieutenant NORDMANN decided that the chances of escape were worth risking. Wrenching himself free he started running at record pace in the direction from which he came, at the same time calling out in a loud voice any names of any of his comrades that suggested themselves in order to make the Boers believe that assistance was at hand. The ruse answered well, for the Boers scampered off without firing a shot.
URL9: Mr. Wilfred G NORDMANN, who is one of the applicants for a lieutenancy in the Second Commonwealth Contingent, is a member of a very old Prussian family. His father, the late Mr. HF NORDMANN, served in the Crimean war with the Anglo German Legion, and in the second China war under the ill-fated GORDON. Mr. Wilfred NORDMANN was born at Nizianagram, India, in June, 1876. He received the greater part of his education at Bishop Cotton's, Bangalore, a well-known Indian college, and matriculated at Madras University. He joined the Bangalore Rifle Volunteers, and gained the star and certificate for extra proficiency. He arrived in Adelaide in 1891, and entered the Engineer in-Chief's Department, after having been placed first in order of merit in the cadetship examination. He served in the 2nd Battalion Infantry (A Company) under Major ADAMS, and later in the Submarine Mining Corps, conducted by Mr. CLARKSON, of the Protector. He was chief petty officer in that corps by competitive examination. Lieutenant NORDMANN joined the Second South Australian Contingent, took part in all its operations, and is entitled to five clasps to his war medal. While in South Africa he had the misfortune to be taken prisoner by a party of Boers just before the occupation of Johannesburg, but he managed to escape and rejoin his regiment almost immediately. He was promoted to the rank of corporal, and returned with, his contingent in May last year [1901].

Apology: For some time now it has been difficult to keep up with the newly available sources (especially the Trove newspaper site) plus the flow of contributions and queries. So I have been forced to prioritise maintenance and data entry over replying to correspondence. Nevertheless, your contributions are being added to the database and acknowledged on the contributions page and, although my replies are many months behind, I will attempt to get to them more often.
