Hint: This site is intended as a search aid - not a definitive source. It is essentially an index to documents that seem to relate to this person plus a very brief precis of relevant elements. Sources often conflict and I also flag things with a ? when I am unsure. So if the information below is important to you, then please check the original sources to see what else they contain (and in case I have inadvertantly introduced transcription and/or precising errors). There can be additional information that was not included in the database for both space and copyright reasons.

Source:# 512 E. Maitland NSW.
URL3: W Maitland NSW.
URL4: Young Rupert PEEK, the Lancer trumpeter, has received the necessary permission from his parents to proceed to South Africa with the Bushmen's Contingent. He is eager for the fray, and hopes to be able to out-do the gallantry of little Bugler SHERLOCK, of the 5th Lancers, who shot three Boers at Elandslanagte. He left Maitland for Sydney last night [22.1.1900].
URL5: Queen's South Africa Medal presented by Duke of York in Sydney 1.6.1901.
URL6: Soldiers for England. — As is well-known the Federal Government intends sending a body of men home to represent tho Commonwealth at the Coronation of His Majesty King Edward VII. It has been decided to send only men who have taken part in the South African war. Last week Captain WC MARKWELL, of the Maitland Lancers, received word on the subject, asking him for nominations from Maitland. Captain NICHOLSON, who saw a lot of service in South Africa, will not be able to go, and the only nomination is that of Trumpeter R PEEK, who has been ordered to report himself at the orderly room, Newcastle, to undergo the necessary medical test. Captain SCOBIE, officer commanding B Company Infantry Regiment, has been informed that two men from the regiment will be taken; and we understand that Private CH MITCHELL will be one of them. Private MITCHELL went to the Soudan as well as to South Africa.
URL7: FROM SCHOOL TO WAR. A few days since [3.1901] at a presentation at Newtown Public School to Trumpeter Charles E BLANCHARD, who is going to South Africa as a bugler, Mr. BRIDGES, Chief Inspector, who made the presentation, said BLANCHARD was 'the first schoolboy from the State of New South Wales to volunteer for service against the Boers.' This statement is incorrect, for with the first contingent of Australian Bushmen went Trumpeter RD PEEK, from the public school at West Maitland. Trumpeter PEEK, who was presented with a handsome silver watch by his schoolmates, has just returned. While in South Africa he was for a time trumpeter to Major-General BADEN-POWELL.

Please email me if you can contribute any other relevant information about this person (eg any other military service, where in Australia they came from or when/where they died). Also, if you find an external link broken.

Apology: For some time now it has been difficult to keep up with the newly available sources (especially the Trove newspaper site) plus the flow of contributions and queries. So I have been forced to prioritise maintenance and data entry over replying to correspondence. Nevertheless, your contributions are being added to the database and acknowledged on the contributions page and, although my replies are many months behind, I will attempt to get to them more often.
