Hint: This site is intended as a search aid - not a definitive source. It is essentially an index to documents that seem to relate to this person plus a very brief precis of relevant elements. Sources often conflict and I also flag things with a ? when I am unsure. So if the information below is important to you, then please check the original sources to see what else they contain (and in case I have inadvertantly introduced transcription and/or precising errors). There can be additional information that was not included in the database for both space and copyright reasons.

URL8: Trooper Alf. PRUSSING, 1st Regiment Australian Bushmen, writing from Mafeking, under date 1.8.1900 to Mr. TE FISHER, Mayor of Grenfell NSW, says:— You must excuse me for not writing before to thank you and the Council for your kind and beautiful present, which I received the day I left Sydney. I will treasure it as long as I live. I would have written before, but we are continually on the move, and the mails are very uncertain. You will see by the papers that our regiment has been in action. Our men have behaved splendidly whenever they have been engaged, and have been specially praised by Major-General Baden-Powell. I have, so far, been lucky enough to escape without a scratch, but during the siege at Elands River, I received a bullet through my helmet. A fow days after we were relieved at Elands River, we joined Lord Methuen's forces, and marched on to Mafeking. On our way we passed through Malmani, where the Imperial Bushmen are garrisoned, but I did not meet any of the Grenfell lads. We only halted there for about thirty minutes. We leave here by rail for Pretoria tomorrow (Sunday), at 8 o'clock, where we will again, join Baden-Powell's force. The Transvaal is a splendid country, but I cannot say much for the people; as for tho Boers them selves, they are a treacherous lot, and will not fight unless well under cover. We expect to get orders for home soon now, as the war is practically over. Again thanking yourself and Council for your handsome present, I remain, etc. Trooper Alf. Prussing.

Please email me if you can contribute any other relevant information about this person (eg any other military service, where in Australia they came from or when/where they died). Also, if you find an external link broken.

Apology: For some time now it has been difficult to keep up with the newly available sources (especially the Trove newspaper site) plus the flow of contributions and queries. So I have been forced to prioritise maintenance and data entry over replying to correspondence. Nevertheless, your contributions are being added to the database and acknowledged on the contributions page and, although my replies are many months behind, I will attempt to get to them more often.
