Sergeant-Major AW COUGHLAN, writing from Newcastle under date 17th December [1901], says - I arrived here per mail train from Charlestown yesterday morning, just as remounts were leaving for the column which is still in the Wakerstrom district, where BOTHA is supposed to have 1500 men. All Australian details are in this camp under Major UMPHELBY, and while here I am acting as Camp Sergeant-Major, which gives me plenty to do but will get a good show to improve in health before rejoining the column. Night marching and wet weather is playing up with us but it is satisfactory to know we are all doing good work. The war is gradually fizzling out and the mines and industries getting into good working order. Refugees and laborers are returning to their old homes. Thanks to the splendid system of block houses the railway lines have been clear for some time. We had a sweep on the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups in which I drew Australian and Omrah. Sergeant CARLISLE was lucky enough to win the ten-shilling sweep. His good luck sticks to him - recommended for DCM wounded slightly a fortnight ago about half an inch from a vital part and then won the ten-shilling sweep. Poor Jim RANKIN (foot police) was wounded in the arm but blood poisoning supervened and he died on the road in. He was a splendid soldier, a big loss to the regiment, also to the foot police. Hector MCDONALD, MCNAMARA and H MCCASKILL are all here, the latter as saddler at the depot. Will PAYNE is OK and left with remounts three days ago. Mr MAYGAR, of C Coy., is being recommended for the VC for carrying a man out of fire about a fortnight ago. We are all hoping he will get it as he has been the best of the subalterns who left Victoria with the Fifth.
