Hint: This site is intended as a search aid - not a definitive source. It is essentially an index to documents that seem to relate to this person plus a very brief precis of relevant elements. Sources often conflict and I also flag things with a ? when I am unsure. So if the information below is important to you, then please check the original sources to see what else they contain (and in case I have inadvertantly introduced transcription and/or precising errors). There can be additional information that was not included in the database for both space and copyright reasons.

Source:# 1191 Bert known as 'Doc' and born 29.5.1879 in Kew Vic., worked in mines at Queenstown Tas. prior to enlistment and returned there after discharge, previous service 6 months BCoy Vic. Rifles, apparently 4th Contingent [&] 1ACH. Included in a photo taken in S. Africa headed 'RODERS - C4281' and with him are George SUTHERLAND, Arthur WOOLCOTT, Jackie SANDS and Bill ROBINSON, written at bottom is '2nd Battn. 1st Aust. Com'th Horse', possibly the Tpr. Bert ROGERS in Thorneycroft's MI.
Roe: unit is almost certainly 2ACH(Vic.) as SUTHERLAND, WOOLCOTT & ROBINSON all served there and SANDS may well be it's Frederick Owen SANDS. Best fit on available evidence is 474 Pte. Frank ROGERS 2ACH(Vic.) who was also born in Kew Vic. and was aged 25 on enlistment in January 1902 which tallies and his 'furnaceman' occupation could also fit with Queenstown. Interestingly 474 ROGERS claims 1 year 4 months prior service with AIR - probably the Aust. Imperial Regt. which points to 183 Pte. Frank Sydney ROGERS of 4VIB who was also a furnaceman so probably not a match. The only possible SOTQ match is Herbert ROGERS of Cape Mounted Police (but he attested in 1893).
URL1: ROGERS William L from Alberton Tas. amongst those selected, passed all necessary tests and chosen for Tas. quota in 2nd. Commonwealth Contingent.
Roe: William L not found in 2ACH but see ROGERS William Lynton 2113 3ACH(Tas). from Alberton.

Source:# 1357 a fellow who lives at the address that 925 Sgt. Herbert ROGERS gave as his address when he enlisted in the 29th Bn., said his prior experience was with the 4th Contingent of the 1st Commonwealth Horse. He later served with the Victorian Rifles. He was certainly old enough to have been to the Boer War but he lasted 'about two minutes' and was sent home from Egypt. Although he claims to have been born in Kensington on the B2455, an Ancestry tree says he was born in Kew in 1879, and the eldest daughter Lillian was born in Queenstown Tas. Lillian is a child for whom he claimed a pension for WW1 service, so he would appear to be the fellow you identified as 'Doc'.
Source:# 1459 Herbert Andrew (Bert) ROGERS, known as "Doc" ROGERS, also served in WW1 in Egypt., in 29Bn. as Sergeant Herbert Andrew ROGERS, No. 925. Family has his attestation and discharge papers. He lasted more than '2 minutes' in Egypt, (as stated by Source #1357). He became medically unfit due to a fistula in ano, which is very painful and requires surgery. He was admitted to about four hospitals in Egypt before sent home with the problem, also tachycardia. His address at time of enlisting in WW1 was Bayswater Road, Kensington. His birth date is 29.5.1879, in Kew. He worked in the mines at Queenstown Tas., married Florence JOHNSON in 1903 and their children Hilda, Lillian and Mervyn were born there, the family moved to Vic. around about 1910. His eldest brother, Private Frank Sydney ROGERS, also served in both the Boer War as 183 4VIB, and in WW1. There is a different Herbert Andrew ROGERS, who was 189 Sgt. Major 189 6ACH(Vic.) in the Boer War.
URL3: WW1 AIF 925 CCoy. 29Bn., Herbert ROGERS a driver aged 38 in 1915 born in Kensington Vic., nok wife in Kensington, previous service 4th Contingent & 1st Commonwealth Horse plus 6 months BCoy. 2Bn. VR, Sergt. 29Bn. returned to Aust. per Itonus from Suez 10.6.1916, discharged MU (fistula & tachycardia) 16.8.1916, 1926 correspondence with Repatriation Commission St. Kilda.

Please email me if you can contribute any other relevant information about this person (eg any other military service, where in Australia they came from or when/where they died). Also, if you find an external link broken.

Apology: For some time now it has been difficult to keep up with the newly available sources (especially the Trove newspaper site) plus the flow of contributions and queries. So I have been forced to prioritise maintenance and data entry over replying to correspondence. Nevertheless, your contributions are being added to the database and acknowledged on the contributions page and, although my replies are many months behind, I will attempt to get to them more often.
