URL7: A cablegram was received yesterday from Major-General Sir Frederick Carrington, in command of the Rhodosian Field Force, stating that Private John CDM SWAN died at Umtali, Rhodesia, on 26.5.1900 of melancholia. Deceased was 23 years of age and unmarried. He is described in the official list as having been a station manager.
