Hint: This site is intended as a search aid - not a definitive source. It is essentially an index to documents that seem to relate to this person plus a very brief precis of relevant elements. Sources often conflict and I also flag things with a ? when I am unsure. So if the information below is important to you, then please check the original sources to see what else they contain (and in case I have inadvertantly introduced transcription and/or precising errors). There can be additional information that was not included in the database for both space and copyright reasons.

URL4: ADELAIDE, Monday Afternoon [20.8.1902]. A cable from London, confirmed from West Australia, announces the death of Trooper William Alexander BROWNLEY, of the Eighth Battalion Australian Commonwealth Horse. The official information states that he died at sea of influenza on the transport St. Andrew, on the voyage from Adelaide to Durban. Trooper William Alexander BROWNLEY of Broken Hill, left by the St. Andrew on May 24 [1902], with the Broken Hill troop of the Eighth Battalion. His untimely death has caused great grief among his friends. He was a strongly-built, healthy young man and was universally liked. He worked on the South mine for a long time prior to his departure. His relatives reside in South Australia, and both they and his local friends were expecting him to return on the Manchester Merchant, duo in Adelaide to-morrow. The delay in announcing his death is rather inexplicable. Apparently he never saw South Africa.
URL4: The 8th Battalion landed in Durban on June 17 [1902], disembarked on June 21, and re-embarked six days later. The voyage thither was unfortunately marred by the death of Tprs. SPILLANE and BROWNLEY, who succumbed to a malignant type of influenza a few days before reaching port. The bodies of both poor fellows were committed to the deep with military honours.
URL5: London 17.7.1902. Privates John SPILLANS and Alexander William BROWNLEY, of the Eighth Commonwealth Contingent, died at sea from influenza while on board the troopship St. Andrew.

Please email me if you can contribute any other relevant information about this person (eg any other military service, where in Australia they came from or when/where they died). Also, if you find an external link broken.

Apology: For some time now it has been difficult to keep up with the newly available sources (especially the Trove newspaper site) plus the flow of contributions and queries. So I have been forced to prioritise maintenance and data entry over replying to correspondence. Nevertheless, your contributions are being added to the database and acknowledged on the contributions page and, although my replies are many months behind, I will attempt to get to them more often.
