URL6: There is much speculation in Manly as to whether 'No. 27, Trumpeter H BUDD,' who is reported seriously ill with fever at Naauwpoort, is not Private H BUDD, who left with the first contingent, as a member of the infantry, under Captain LEGGE. It will be remembered that this company was mounted, and probably 'Trumpeter' should read 'Trooper,' as there does not appear to be another of his name. URL7: RECEPTION AT MANLY. A reception was given on Thursday evening [5.6.1902] at Manly to four returned troopers of Colonel LASSETTER's regiment who are residents of that suburb. The Mayor of Manly (Alderman EW QUIRK MLA) and a committee arranged a dinner for the men at the Pier Hotel, which a representative company attended. The Mayor occupied the chair and Privates BEEL, THOMPSON, STEVENS and SIMPSON were on his left. ... Pte. SIMPSON briefly responded. ... The chairman presented Privates SIMPSON and BEEL Beel with a gold medal and a case of pipes respectively, and explained that had he been aware of the return of Privates THOMPSON and STEVENS he would have had mementoes for them also, but he would rectify the omission later. ... Mr. QUIRK laid stress upon the fact that 20 Manly youths had gone to the front, and he was thankful that all had been spared save two. ... Mr QUIRK announced that there was the nucleus of a fund in hand for a memorial to Privates BUDD and LIPSCOMB who died in service in South Africa. URL8: A complimentary dinner was tendered by the residents of Manly on June 5 [1902], at the Pier Hotel, to Troopers JWN LEWIS, J BEEL, STEPHEN and THOMPSON who returned by the Aurania. There was a good attendance of residents, and the Mayor of Manly (Alderman BW QUIRK MLA) presided, in welcoming the guests Mr. QUIRK made mention of the fact that 22 young men had left Manly for the war, notwithstanding the limited population. Only two had left their bones on the veldt. Manlyites were thoroughly loyal, and it was the intention of the residents to erect a fountain in one of the reserves, with the names of all those who had left Manly for the front, and of those who had died there, Troopers BUDD and LIPSCOMBE. The returning soldiers all briefly responded. ... Before the conclusion of the programme the returning soldiers were made the recipients of mementoes of their trip to South Africa.
