Hint: This site is intended as a search aid - not a definitive source. It is essentially an index to documents that seem to relate to this person plus a very brief precis of relevant elements. Sources often conflict and I also flag things with a ? when I am unsure. So if the information below is important to you, then please check the original sources to see what else they contain (and in case I have inadvertantly introduced transcription and/or precising errors). There can be additional information that was not included in the database for both space and copyright reasons.

URL5: memorial service 8.4.1900 for Pte. H BUDD first Manly NSW soldier to die in S. Africa.
URL6: There is much speculation in Manly as to whether 'No. 27, Trumpeter H BUDD,' who is reported seriously ill with fever at Naauwpoort, is not Private H BUDD, who left with the first contingent, as a member of the infantry, under Captain LEGGE. It will be remembered that this company was mounted, and probably 'Trumpeter' should read 'Trooper,' as there does not appear to be another of his name.
URL7: RECEPTION AT MANLY. A reception was given on Thursday evening [5.6.1902] at Manly to four returned troopers of Colonel LASSETTER's regiment who are residents of that suburb. The Mayor of Manly (Alderman EW QUIRK MLA) and a committee arranged a dinner for the men at the Pier Hotel, which a representative company attended. The Mayor occupied the chair and Privates BEEL, THOMPSON, STEVENS and SIMPSON were on his left. ... Pte. SIMPSON briefly responded. ... The chairman presented Privates SIMPSON and BEEL Beel with a gold medal and a case of pipes respectively, and explained that had he been aware of the return of Privates THOMPSON and STEVENS he would have had mementoes for them also, but he would rectify the omission later. ... Mr. QUIRK laid stress upon the fact that 20 Manly youths had gone to the front, and he was thankful that all had been spared save two. ... Mr QUIRK announced that there was the nucleus of a fund in hand for a memorial to Privates BUDD and LIPSCOMB who died in service in South Africa.
URL8: A complimentary dinner was tendered by the residents of Manly on June 5 [1902], at the Pier Hotel, to Troopers JWN LEWIS, J BEEL, STEPHEN and THOMPSON who returned by the Aurania. There was a good attendance of residents, and the Mayor of Manly (Alderman BW QUIRK MLA) presided, in welcoming the guests Mr. QUIRK made mention of the fact that 22 young men had left Manly for the war, notwithstanding the limited population. Only two had left their bones on the veldt. Manlyites were thoroughly loyal, and it was the intention of the residents to erect a fountain in one of the reserves, with the names of all those who had left Manly for the front, and of those who had died there, Troopers BUDD and LIPSCOMBE. The returning soldiers all briefly responded. ... Before the conclusion of the programme the returning soldiers were made the recipients of mementoes of their trip to South Africa.
URL9: DEATHS FROM ENTERIC FIEVER. Private H BUDD, of the New South Wales Mounted Infantry, died from enteric fever at Naauwpoort; also Private JH HARRISON, of the New South Wales Army Medical Staff, on March 18 [1900], at Cape Town.

Please email me if you can contribute any other relevant information about this person (eg any other military service, where in Australia they came from or when/where they died). Also, if you find an external link broken.

Apology: For some time now it has been difficult to keep up with the newly available sources (especially the Trove newspaper site) plus the flow of contributions and queries. So I have been forced to prioritise maintenance and data entry over replying to correspondence. Nevertheless, your contributions are being added to the database and acknowledged on the contributions page and, although my replies are many months behind, I will attempt to get to them more often.
