Hint: This site is intended as a search aid - not a definitive source. It is essentially an index to documents that seem to relate to this person plus a very brief precis of relevant elements. Sources often conflict and I also flag things with a ? when I am unsure. So if the information below is important to you, then please check the original sources to see what else they contain (and in case I have inadvertantly introduced transcription and/or precising errors). There can be additional information that was not included in the database for both space and copyright reasons.

URL4: Port Pirie, 5.12.1900. Trooper BUTEFISCH, who returned to South Australia by the Harlech Castle, and arrived at his home in Port Pirie on Monday [3.12.1900], was entertained at a social on Monday evening by his fellow employees at the Broken Hill Proprietary Company's works. Mr. WT GRONOW occupied the chair, and on his right were the guest of the evening, Mr. W ROBERTSON (manager Broken Hill Proprietary works), and Mr. J POAGE, and on his left were Mr. HC WARREN and Trooper FT LEANE. The welcome was intended for Trooper BATES as well, but he unfortunately missed the train, so his welcome, had to be postponed. Songs and complimentary speeches were made during the evening. The committee who were responsible for the success of the affair were Messes. PJ RYAN (secretary), TRENERRY, APPLEBY, JONES, J RYAN, GREY and KNEE. Trooper BUTEFISCH in replying, said it was a proud moment of in his life to have received such a welcome. The latter part of the campaign had been very hard, but British leaders and soldiers were equal to the occasion, and had surmounted all difficulties. He had gone from Cape Town to Koomati Poort without mishap and had only been in hospital once. The Australians had received many kindnesses from the British, troops, who were surprised at the fighting capabilities of the colonials. That welcome, he assured them, would long be remembered by him. The proceedings were most enjoyable.
URL5: Military Social at Pt. Pirie. On the evening of the 22nd inst.[10.1902] the officers and men of D Company (Port Pirie) were entertained by the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr. and Mrs Fred GREY) at their residence, "Lealholme." Amongst those who responded to the invitation were Captain FORGAN, Captain PEARCE (the officer commanding D Company), Lieut.-Surgeon CARR, Lieut. CASHMORE, Color Sergeant SYMONDS, Sergeants WALTERS and BUTTERY, Corporals GOODHART, NETTLE and HANCOCK, L.-Corporals WALSH and MERRITT and about 40 privates of the company. There were also present the following returned soldiers:-Sergeant-Major LUCKETT, Sergeant REIDY, Corporal BRANDT, Troopers BUTEFISCH, STEWART, WELLINGTON and ROW. ... Trooper BUTEFISCH remarked that the hearty way in which the company had received the toast showed that they had appreciated the efforts of the Australians to uphold the cause of the Empire generally and the colonies in particular. He had gone away with the first contingent and he remarked that they had embarked for South Africa three years before, almost to the day, while it was two years ago to the very day when a number of Australians, including himself, were reviewed by the general commanding at Arcadia, just outside Pretoria, who eulogised their work in the campaign. The same day he and his companions left for Cape Town, and he remembered that Sergeant REIDY was amongst the number of those who came to see them off (applause).

Please email me if you can contribute any other relevant information about this person (eg any other military service, where in Australia they came from or when/where they died). Also, if you find an external link broken.

Apology: For some time now it has been difficult to keep up with the newly available sources (especially the Trove newspaper site) plus the flow of contributions and queries. So I have been forced to prioritise maintenance and data entry over replying to correspondence. Nevertheless, your contributions are being added to the database and acknowledged on the contributions page and, although my replies are many months behind, I will attempt to get to them more often.
