URL1: initial W, Qld. soldier.
Source:# 1357 William CALLAWAY, served for 12 months in South Africa - probably with 5QIB (as opposed to the 5th QAB written on his form). Also 2 years 5th AIR and 2 years Garrison Artillery. Claimed 18 months South African War on the front page - possibly after 5 QIB he stayed on for six months. He embarked with the 7th Infantry Battalion AIF on the first boat from Melbourne, but was sent home unfit for service, landing back in Melbourne four days after the landings at Gallipoli.

African War 5QIB 12 months, L/Cpl. 7Bn. 1.12.1914 Pte. 19.1.1915, returned to Aust. per 'Ulysses' medically unfit 21.3.1915, discharged 29.4.1915, 1935 correspondence with Repatriation Commission Melbourne.
