Hint: This site is intended as a search aid - not a definitive source. It is essentially an index to documents that seem to relate to this person plus a very brief precis of relevant elements. Sources often conflict and I also flag things with a ? when I am unsure. So if the information below is important to you, then please check the original sources to see what else they contain (and in case I have inadvertantly introduced transcription and/or precising errors). There can be additional information that was not included in the database for both space and copyright reasons.

URL6: BACK FROM THE WAR. At the Singleton Railway Station, on Saturday afternoon [12.1.1901], a number of the residents assembled, to welcome home, on their return from South Africa, Corporal CONELLY, Trooper WATTS and and Trooper CHILCOTT, of the Singleton Lancers. Troopers FAULKNER and BARCLAY, who returned to Singleton on the previous day, were also officially welcomed with their three comrades. When the train steamed in, the three first-named alighted and were greeted with cheers and welcomed by their relatives and more intimate friends. They were conducted to the outside verandah of the station house, where Alderman MINER (in the absence of Mr. HINDE, Mayor of South Singleton), extended a hearty welcome to the five returned soldiers, and called for three cheers for them, which were lustily given. Mr. MCFADDEN, Mayor of Singleton, then stepped forward, and welcomed the men, on behalf of the people of the town, back to their native land. Four of the five, he said, went to Aldershot two years ago to obtain a six months' course of instruction. On their way home they volunteered for active service in tho South African campaign. Their offer, with that of others, was accepted, and he was pleased to say that, though they had gone right through the campaign and had had some narrow escapes, they had come out scathless. And now the residents were pleased to see thorn back again safe and sound. He asked for three cheers for the returned soldiers. The Mayor's request having been complied with, he read the address, which was identical with that previously printed, signed by the Mayors of Singleton and South Singleton. Mr. CH DIGHT MP, on behalf of the district, gave to the men a warm welcome home to the land of their birth from the battlefield, wherein they had up to recently been engaged. The Commonwealth of Australia was safe when she had such men, he said, to uphold her dignity and her honour. They need fear no foe. He congratulated the men and their parents on their safe arrival home.

Please email me if you can contribute any other relevant information about this person (eg any other military service, where in Australia they came from or when/where they died). Also, if you find an external link broken.

Apology: For some time now it has been difficult to keep up with the newly available sources (especially the Trove newspaper site) plus the flow of contributions and queries. So I have been forced to prioritise maintenance and data entry over replying to correspondence. Nevertheless, your contributions are being added to the database and acknowledged on the contributions page and, although my replies are many months behind, I will attempt to get to them more often.
