Hint: This site is intended as a search aid - not a definitive source. It is essentially an index to documents that seem to relate to this person plus a very brief precis of relevant elements. Sources often conflict and I also flag things with a ? when I am unsure. So if the information below is important to you, then please check the original sources to see what else they contain (and in case I have inadvertantly introduced transcription and/or precising errors). There can be additional information that was not included in the database for both space and copyright reasons.

Murray: 'A'Sqn. S. Coastal Districts, died at sea on 'Custodian' 9.6.1902 from fish poisoning.
Source:# 22 War Memorial Brisbane.
B5207: saddler from Silkstone near Ipswich Qld.
URL1: saddler aged 20 from Silkstone near Ipswich Qld., born in Newcastle-on-Tyne Eng., next of kin father at Silkstone.
URL5: I received several letters (written on board the troopship Custodian, under dates of 16th and 18th June [1902] respectively) from South Africa yesterday, and in reference to the demise of Bugler C ANDERSON and Private DUGDALE, I give the following extracts taken from letters forwarded by Company Sergeant-Major H PATON and Private James BRYCE Sergeant-Major PATON says - "The fourth week has proved to be very trying to all on board. One of our Ipswich boys contracted brain fever and died, his name being Bugler ANDERSON, late of Ipswich C company, QMI. Several of his friends were with him up to the last. A subscription is being collected by a few energetic members of the battalion for the purpose erecting a memorial to our late and most respected comrade. Up to the present it has not been decided exactly what form the memorial will take, so I cannot give you any information regarding it. Private BRYCE writes as follows - "Touching Bugler ANDERSON's sad death, which was regrettable, he being a general favourite amongst all who knew him, it may be as well to inform you that every attention was bestowed upon him by Dr. MAUNSELL and his staff, also by his comrades, but he never rallied, nor did he regain consciousness from the sixth or seventh day of his admission into the hospital. He died on the 9th of June of acute failure of the heart supervening upon fish poisoning. Following this was another regrettable death, that of Trooper DUGDALE, of Gympie, but formerly of Ipswich, who was admitted into the hospital on the 6th and died on the 15th of June [1902] of a chronic ailment of the stomach. Both bodies were buried at sea, and the service was a very impresssive one performed by the ship's captain. I may add that Trooper DUGDALE was also a general favourite, and made many friends amongst us, as he possessed numerous excellent qualities.'
URL6: The following deaths are reported - Trumpeter John ANDERSON and Private AR DUGDALE, of the Queensland Section of the Seventh Commonwealth Contingent, from fish-poisoning and gastritis respectively, aboard the Custodian, Private Herbert TUBER, of the South Australian Section of the Seventh Australian Contingent, from rheumatism and endocarditis, at Durban. Private Alfred KATTING, of the Queensland Section of the First Commonwealth Regiment, from enteric fever, at Germiston;

Please email me if you can contribute any other relevant information about this person (eg any other military service, where in Australia they came from or when/where they died). Also, if you find an external link broken.

Apology: For some time now it has been difficult to keep up with the newly available sources (especially the Trove newspaper site) plus the flow of contributions and queries. So I have been forced to prioritise maintenance and data entry over replying to correspondence. Nevertheless, your contributions are being added to the database and acknowledged on the contributions page and, although my replies are many months behind, I will attempt to get to them more often.
