Hint: This site is intended as a search aid - not a definitive source. It is essentially an index to documents that seem to relate to this person plus a very brief precis of relevant elements. Sources often conflict and I also flag things with a ? when I am unsure. So if the information below is important to you, then please check the original sources to see what else they contain (and in case I have inadvertantly introduced transcription and/or precising errors). There can be additional information that was not included in the database for both space and copyright reasons.

Extracts and Comments (from Sources as shown) | | Murray: Queen's South Africa medal and 2 clasps. B5172: next of kin in Bundaberg Qld. URL2: photo. URL3: A well-known and popular young Bundabergian is with us once again in the person of Lieut. Bert CURTIS, eldest son of Captain WE CURTIS, who has just completed fifteen months active campaigning in South Africa, and has returned home, his many friends will be pleased to learn, sound in wind and limb. He is veritable Mr. SOBERSIDES on affairs of the war and wisely says the time is past for telling tales of 'deering do' on the battlefield, sufficient for all is the knowledge that what has been accomplished by the arms of the old land assisted by the representatives of Australasia, is before the world now in the happy ending of a long and trying struggle. Lieut. CURTIS left with the 6th Queensland Contingent and took part in the whole of the drives made by Lord KITCHENER. It was these drives, he says that more than anything else brought the Boors to a recognition of the futility of further resistance, as by their means the enemy were kept perpetually on the move, and prevented from making any preparation for resistance, while to attempt to escape simply meant that they must bring up against a British column,
a blockhouse system, or a series of armoured trains. Instancing one drive in particular, Lieut. CURTIS said it scoured an area of 60 miles square square. Taken by and large, he regards the Boers as a brave and honourable people, and says they showed the most respect and friendship for the medicos, particularly when attending the wounded in the field, a statement that is also voiced by Surgeon Capt. ROW, who returned to Bundaberg with Lieut. CURTIS.

Please email me if you can

they died). Also, if you find an external link broken.
Apology: For some time now it has been difficult to keep up with the newly available sources (especially the Trove newspaper site) plus the flow of contributions and queries. So I have been forced to prioritise maintenance and data entry over replying to correspondence. Nevertheless, your contributions are being added to the database and acknowledged on the contributions page and, although my replies are many months behind, I will attempt to get to them more often.
