Hint: This site is intended as a search aid - not a definitive source. It is essentially an index to documents that seem to relate to this person plus a very brief precis of relevant elements. Sources often conflict and I also flag things with a ? when I am unsure. So if the information below is important to you, then please check the original sources to see what else they contain (and in case I have inadvertantly introduced transcription and/or precising errors). There can be additional information that was not included in the database for both space and copyright reasons.

Ad. Advertiser: Captain W DE PASSEY of the South Australian Headquarters Staff, has been selected for the important position of staff officer of the local Mounted Rifles Brigade. Captain DE PASSEY has risen from the ranks by sheer merit. For years, in his capacity as instructor, he trained the members of the Mounted Rifles, and when the Second Contingent was being organised, he was selected by Brigadier-General GORDON to accompany the troops as sergeant-major. He rendered a good account of himself in South Africa, and was rewarded by promotion to a lieutenancy on the field. Although there was a proposal that he should not retain his commission, but should return to his former rank when he came back to the State, the military authorities capitulated to public opinion; and subsequently he was made a captain, and gazetted commanding officer of the South Australian portion of the First Commonwealth Contingent. Captain DE PASSEY will enter upon his new duties forthwith.

Two years ago when he left for South Africa as sergeant major he occupied the position of SW, and now has been elevated to the WM's chair. ...
Register: Capt. W DE PASSEY (line drawing), leader of the South Australian section of the first Commonwealth contingent, has been a soldier from his youth, having enlisted at the age of 18 in the 5th Lancers, and subsequently served with the 17th lancers in the Zulu war, for which he possesses a medal and clasp. He has since 1887 been drill instructor to the South Australian forces. He was among those who formed the contingent which went to London in connection with the festivities of the Queen's Jubilee. He has also served 15 months with the second contingent in South Africa, working on the veldt from Bloemfontein to Koomati Poort on Lord ROBERTS's march back to Pretoria, and afterwards in the Godwin Valley district, where he remained five months in charge of a detachment of South Australians, at the front. He has the respect and esteem of every member of the force under his command, and is every inch a soldier.

Please email me if you can contribute any other relevant information about this person (eg any other military service, where in Australia they came from or when/where they died). Also, if you find an external link broken.

Apology: For some time now it has been difficult to keep up with the newly available sources (especially the Trove newspaper site) plus the flow of contributions and queries. So I have been forced to prioritise maintenance and data entry over replying to correspondence. Nevertheless, your contributions are being added to the database and acknowledged on the contributions page and, although my replies are many months behind, I will attempt to get to them more often.
