Five of them being present - namely, VOLKMAN, SPREADBOROUGH, WHIPHAM, DOYLE and RENWICK, their pipes were presented to them by the Premier. URL7: At the request of the Mayor, the Premier then presented to several non-commissioned officers the pipes which had been sent to South Africa by her Majesty the Queen for presentation to the soldiers. The recipients, he explained, had been selected by their officers on account of their good behaviour, and of the general excellence of their work. The pipes were of the GBD brand, mounted with a silver band, on which was engraved the Queen's monogram.
