The memorial erected in honour of the officers, non-commissioned officers, and men of the Western Australian contingents who were killed in action or died from wounds or disease during the war in South Africa was unveiled on Saturday afternoon [6.9.1902] by His Excellency the Administrator (Sir Edward STONE). The memorial is erected in King's Park, a short distance from the main entrance, and on the left side of the drive. ... Sir James then read a tabulated statement giving the details of the casualties to Western Australian soldiers which were to be inscribed on the memorial. URL8: A special war gratuity of £20 has been paid to those members of Western Australian contingents who gained distinguished service medals during the war in
South Africa. Of the eleven hundred odd men who represented the State seven
gained this honour, two of them afterwards being numbered among the victims
of the campaign. These latter were Privates FORCE and ANGEL. The others
decorated with the medal were Sergeants EDWARDS and BARRY, Corporal BURLEY,
and Private CORKHILL, of the First Contingent, and Sergeant GEORGE of the Third Contingent.
