South Africa by the transport Aurania was Lieutenant CHG HANNAM, formerly attached to the Bushveldt Carbineers. He had as brother officers Lieutenants MORANT, HANDCOCK, PICTON and WITTON, and was with the corps when Captain HUNT was killed. With regard to WITTON, Lieutenant HANNAM gives it as his opinion that something should be done. WITTON he says was only a boy one of those quiet sort of fellows who would not harm anybody - but, unfortunately, he was easily led. It never seemed to strike him that he had done anything unlawful, and when he heard that his trial was pending he remarked that it would be jolly bad luck if he even got cashiered. Ad. Observer: comments re MORANT and HANDCOCK 6.1902.
