Forget anything and everything that you might have heard or rumoured about activities for third term. It's all wrong, (bound to be ...) Here is the latest and only truth of the matter - to be taken in and acted upon please.
For third term we will be singing Britten's St Nicolas. SCUNA numbers will be swelled by the addition of interested people from Canberra College of Advanced Education, Canberra Children's Choir and anyone else who would like to sing this work with us.
A small group will perform Nigel Butterly's The True Samaritan and Britten's Hymn to St. Cecilia which will complete the program. The concert will be sung in the Canberra School of Music.1
Rehearsals: For the St Nicolas will be Tuesday evening - 7.20 to 9p.m. from September (tomorrow) till the concert (mid October) and attendance at the rehearsal camp at Sturt Island on the week-end of 18th and 19th September. Rehearsal times at camp are given on the attached sheet. Non residential attendance is possible at camp, although if at all possible we would prefer you to come and stay for the week-end.
Small group rehearsal of the other works will take place on Tuesday from 9pm, after the St. Nicolas rehearsals. Rehearsals will be held in the meetings room at the ANU Union. Please come early on Tuesday so music can be issued smoothly, $2 music deposit required. The concert date will be fixed in the next couple of days... to aid your personal planning!
SCUNA members are reminded:-
We will be required from 3.45 till 4.15, but are invited to remain for the whole ceremony and refreshments afterwards. We will be seated at the back of Melville Hall so it will be possible to leave after the singing if need be.
Tony C_____ will have gowns on Tuesday night for those who need them. Dress will be tidy + academic gown. Colin L________ will provide copies of the V. Williams Elizabethan songs to those singing, also on Tuesday.
Meeting, Dinner and Musicale....
Garran Hall Senior Common Room is the venue (see map)

* With the exception of the secretary, this committee does not take office until January 1977.3
1The whole choir sang Hymn to St Cecilia as well as St Nicolas. The Canberra School of Music auditorium (not yet named Llewellyn Hall) had just opened. See programme.
2The first SCUNA sweatshirt was produced in 1970(?), silkscreened by Richard Hartley(?). It was pale yellow, with purple printing that actually looked a bit grey.
On the front was a stylised version of the SCUNA logo (the four treble clefs were lacking their feet). I don't remember if "SCUNA" was there as well, but I suspect it was. The back could be blank, or could feature one of two possible portraits of Beethoven. There was some controversy about the Beethoven portraits, but I can't remember what it was.
I ask myself now, "Why Beethoven, when we mostly sang early music?" Perhaps it was because he had such a silkscreenable face. Hartley (or was it the ANU Kite-Flying Team?) had a huge red kite named Ludwig which featured one of the portraits. You can just make it out in this photo, provided by Hartley.
The 1976 sweatshirt was an altogether more sober affair, as can be seen in this photo, provided by Robert Taylor.
3I don't know when this practice was instituted. The 1975 constitution only specifies when the committee would be elected - four weeks after the start of third term. No doubt the reorganisation of the year into semesters had an effect. I believe SCUNA committees now run on calendar years.
