Soldiers of the Queen in the Second Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902

The Index of Soldiers, Sailors and Nurses of the Queen in the Second Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902 is a pointer to published sources (mostly online) which identify the unit/regiment in which they served - and sometimes much more.

Finding the surviving records of Boer War veterans in the UK National Archives (Kew) can be like looking for a needle in a haystack unless you know their unit/regiment. British Army records are filed by regiment and there is no overall surname index for the Boer War.

The SOTQ Index aims to narrow your search for Boer War veterans but do not expect too much from it - at this stage it still covers little more than half of the 500,000 Boer War soldiers and nurses on the British side. Moreover, many entries just provide initials rather than given names. Hopefully that could still make your haystack a bit smaller.

An offline version of the SOTQ database (as at 1 October 2012) is available on my SOTQ CD which is a 467MB download from Dropbox.

Other Sources

Don't overlook the Casualties link when seeking information about Boer War soldiers and nurses. It points to Martin Edwards'  Roll of Honour Database which includes much more than just casualties.

Acknowledgements

The SOTQ Index would not be possible without the efforts of D R Forsyth, Stan Kaplan, Kieron Spires, Kevin Asplin, David Biggins and the members of the British Medal Forum plus many others who laboured long to make the Boer War records more accessible - not to mention the myriad anonymous military clerks who created the originals.

It is coming to you through the volunteer-run PCUG TIP ISP using SQLite, Apache and CGI under Linux with scripts written in Perl and HTML by Owen Cook. The material was prepared using Konqueror, Seamonkey Composer, Open Office Calc. and Kwrite under openSuSE Linux.

Can You Assist?

Please email me (after reading the Can You Help page) if you know of, or can provide, any other online information identifying Boer War soldiers by regiment that could be included in the index. The greater the coverage the more likelihood of searches being successful. Alternatively, the WO127 Project Team would welcome some assistance and their efforts are a mainstay of the SOTQ Project.
