The third "Convocation of Capri Convertibles" was
held in Canberra over the weekend of 12-13 October 2002. Twenty vehicles took part, all of
them Capri convertibles except for three "ring-ins" - an MG-F substituting for a
Capri that was ill in hospital, and a Mk1 Escort and a Mk3 Capri V6 belonging to ASFOC's
President and Treasurer. Six cars travelled long distances to be here: one from Newcastle,
three from Sydney, one from Melbourne and one from Mornington. [For those of you reading
this in the USA, if you substitute Charlotte NC for Canberra, those cars could have been
from Savannah GA, Charleston SC, Norfolk VA and Hampton VA. Previous CCCs have had even
wider catchment, including Brisbane (cf Ft Myers FL) and Adelaide (cf Baton Rouge LA).]
We met on Saturday afternoon at the National Archives building, where old
acquaintanceships were renewed, new ones were made, and commemorative shirts were handed
out. We then set out on a lazy tour and practice observation-run which allowed the
visiting crews to see some of Canberra's hidden treasures, including less-well-known
features such as Fyshwick Fresh Food Markets, RMC Duntroon, St John's Church & Schoolhouse (established 1841), Canberra
Museum & Gallery (which is not the National Museum!!). As you can see from the photos, the weather was
glorious and allowed top-down touring. We finished the run at ScreenSound Australia, where we
had afternoon tea and then made a trip down memory lane and beyond, with a visit to
"Sights and Sounds" - an exhibition of props, costumes, and audio and video
bites from our radio, film and TV history since before Federation. |
